Adamite rolls are high-performance rolling mill rolls designed for roughing stands in bar, section, structural, and wire rod mills. Manufactured with a carbon content of 1.3–2.3% and alloyed with chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and molybdenum (Mo), they undergo optimized heat treatment to achieve an excellent balance of wear resistance, strength, and toughness for demanding hot rolling applications.
In terms of composition and mechanical properties, Adamite material is positioned between cast steel and cast iron. It combines the high strength and impact resistance of cast steel with the superior wear resistance of cast iron, providing stable hardness throughout the working layer, excellent bite performance, and extended groove life. These characteristics help reduce roll consumption, minimize maintenance, and improve rolling efficiency.
With their reliable performance and cost-effective service life, Adamite rolls are widely used in bar mills, section mills, structural steel mills, and wire rod mills. CYKC Group supplies multiple Adamite roll grades and offers customized dimensions, hardness ranges, groove machining, and heat treatment solutions to match different rolling conditions and customer requirements.

Excellent Wear Resistance
Adamite rolls contain a balanced distribution of hard carbides that significantly improves resistance to abrasion and friction. This helps reduce roll wear, extend groove life, and minimize the frequency of roll replacement, especially in high-load rolling applications.
High Impact Strength and Toughness
With a microstructure positioned between cast steel and cast iron, Adamite rolls provide excellent impact resistance while maintaining sufficient toughness. They can withstand heavy rolling loads and sudden impact during roughing operations, reducing the risk of premature cracking or roll failure.
Stable Hardness Across the Working Layer
Adamite rolls feature a uniform hardness profile throughout the working layer, typically ranging from 40–65 HSD depending on the grade. Stable hardness helps maintain consistent groove geometry, improves dimensional accuracy, and delivers reliable rolling performance throughout the roll campaign.
Excellent Bite Performance
The optimized microstructure provides good bite performance, allowing the rolls to grip hot steel effectively during rolling. This contributes to stable material feeding, improved rolling efficiency, and consistent product quality.

Easy Groove Machining and Regrinding
Compared with harder roll materials such as HSS rolls, Adamite rolls offer excellent machinability. Precision groove machining and regrinding can be completed efficiently, reducing maintenance time and lowering overall operating costs.

Cost-Effective Solution for Hot Rolling Mills
Adamite rolls offer an ideal balance between performance and cost. Their long service life, reliable rolling performance, and relatively low manufacturing cost make them a popular choice for bar mills, section mills, structural steel mills, and other hot rolling applications where productivity and operating efficiency are critical.

The testing of roll tensile strength primarily involves the following steps:
1. Cutting
Cut a 30 mm thick circular test specimen from the effective length of the lower roll neck.
2. Preparing Test Bar Blanks
Cut test bar blanks on an in-line cutting machine to lengths specified in the test bar drawings.
3. Machining Test Bars (See attached diagram)
Machine the test bar on a lathe according to the drawing specifications, achieving a surface roughness of Ra 3.2. All arcs must have smooth transitions, and there must be no tool marks or scoring.
Remove burrs using fine sandpaper. Inspect the geometric dimensions of the test bar and record the initial data.
4. Tensile Strength Testing
Challenge: At a large steel mill, the existing rolls on the 650mm roughing mill stand frequently suffered from severe “fire cracking,” resulting in short rolling cycles. Frequent shutdowns for roll replacement led to high maintenance costs.
CYKC Group Solution: Based on the mill’s rolling load parameters, we custom-designed Adamite rolls with optimized chemical composition. Through an improved vacuum melting process, we enhanced the alloy’s purity and optimized the carbide distribution on the roll surface.
Final Results: After six months of continuous monitoring, the service life (wear life) of these rolls increased by 20% under the same high-load conditions, significantly reducing the roll consumption cost per metric ton of steel.

Indonesian Bar Rolling Mill Improved Roll Life by 68%
A medium-speed bar rolling mill in Indonesia experienced frequent roll replacement, uneven wear, and increasing maintenance costs. The previous rolls achieved an average campaign life of approximately 2,500 tons, resulting in frequent downtime and unstable rolling performance.
After evaluating the customer’s rolling conditions, CYKC recommended AD180 Adamite Rolls with an optimized alloy composition, precision CNC groove machining, and controlled heat treatment to improve wear resistance and thermal stability.
| Performance | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Roll Life | 2,500 tons | 4,200 tons |
| Service Life | — | +68% |
| Roll Changes | Frequent | Significantly Reduced |
| Product Stability | Moderate | Excellent |
The customer achieved longer roll life, fewer roll changes, improved dimensional consistency, and lower maintenance costs, contributing to more stable production and higher overall mill efficiency.

Cause
Surface cracks usually result from repeated thermal cycling during hot rolling. Rapid heating and cooling generate thermal fatigue, while excessive rolling force, improper heat treatment, or network cementite may accelerate crack initiation.
Solution
CYKC minimizes surface cracking by optimizing carbon content, alloy composition (Ni, Cr, Mo), and heat treatment. Each roll undergoes ultrasonic inspection and hardness testing before delivery to ensure reliable performance. Read more: https://cykcgroup.com/common-adamite-roll-failures/
