Indefinite Chilled Cast Iron (ICDP) Work Rolls are widely used in hot rolling mills for intermediate and finishing stands. They provide an excellent balance of wear resistance, thermal crack resistance, and stable hardness, making them one of the most cost-effective roll materials for bar mills, wire rod mills, hot strip mills, and section mills.
Manufactured using centrifugal composite casting or static casting, ICDP rolls feature a graphite-containing working layer that improves lubrication, minimizes thermal fatigue, and maintains consistent hardness throughout the working layer. Different matrix structures—including pearlitic, bainitic, martensitic, and mixed microstructures—can be customized according to rolling conditions to achieve the optimal balance of wear resistance, toughness, and service life.
Instead of supplying standard ICDP rolls only, CYKC Group customizes the roll grade, hardness, alloy composition, and heat treatment according to each customer’s rolling conditions.
Our engineering team evaluates:
This allows us to recommend the most suitable ICDP grade for longer roll life, stable rolling performance, and lower production costs.
The working layer of ICDP rolls combines alloy carbides with uniformly distributed graphite, providing excellent wear resistance while maintaining stable hardness throughout the effective working layer. The presence of graphite also improves lubrication and significantly reduces the risk of thermal cracking during hot rolling.

1. Excellent Wear Resistance
High Ni-Cr alloy carbides provide excellent resistance to abrasive wear and extend roll campaign life.
2. Superior Thermal Crack Resistance
Uniform graphite distribution helps relieve thermal stress and minimizes fire cracks during hot rolling.
3. Stable Hardness
The graphite structure remains nearly constant throughout the working layer, ensuring consistent hardness after multiple regrinding operations.
4. Longer Roll Service Life
Reduced wear and thermal fatigue significantly decrease roll replacement frequency and maintenance costs.
5. Improved Mill Productivity
Longer rolling campaigns reduce downtime and improve overall mill operating efficiency.

For the finishing stands of the continuous rolling mill of strip and bar, the pre-finishing stands of high-speed wire, the intermediate, and the front of finishing stands of a small section are also utilized as thin plates and straightening rolls.

FAQ
What is the difference between ICDP and HSS rolls?
ICDP rolls and HSS rolls are both widely used in hot rolling mills, but they serve different operating conditions.
ICDP Rolls provide excellent thermal crack resistance, stable hardness, and cost-effective performance, making them suitable for many intermediate and finishing stands.
HSS Rolls offer significantly higher wear resistance and hot hardness, typically achieving 3–5 times longer groove life than ICDP rolls in demanding rolling conditions.
Our engineers can recommend the most suitable roll material based on your mill configuration and production requirements.
