Improving the comprehensive performance of rolling rolls and helping steel enterprises reduce costs and increase efficiency

Throughout the entire process of steel production, whether it is strip steel, profiles, rebar, wire rods or other steel products, the rolling roll is the most core component. At the same time, it is also the most important consumable part on the rolling machine. Therefore, how to effectively extend the service life of the rolling mill directly relates to the stable operation of the production line and the overall cost of the enterprise, becoming a key issue for us to create value for our customers.

To delve deeper into and solve this issue, we organized a special meeting, aiming to help users significantly reduce the consumption of rolling rolls through a systematic approach. Our core concept is: based on the specific rolling conditions of the customers, we design personalized rolling roll materials, and combine them with refined usage and maintenance processes to achieve the optimization of rolling roll performance.

The following are several key improvement directions that we have identified through our practical experience:

Personalized Roll Material Design: Ensuring Performance from the Source

The “one-size-fits-all” material selection approach is no longer sufficient to meet the demands of modern high-efficiency rolling. We specialize in personalized roller design. Based on the rolling force, temperature, and steel type characteristics of the customers, we tailor the roller materials. This solution precisely balances the wide adaptability, high accident resistance, and high wear resistance of the rollers. It reduces consumption from the source and achieves maximum efficiency.

Precise Process Control: Three Key Process Steps

In addition to high-quality materials, scientific usage and maintenance are another pillar for extending the lifespan of the rolls. We focus on the following three aspects:

Standardize the preheating process: Reduce thermal stress.

Before the rolling mill rolls are put into operation, it is essential to carry out a strict preheating procedure. Preheating can effectively reduce the temperature gradient between the surface and the interior of the roll body, significantly reducing the internal stress caused by thermal shock, thereby preventing the early emergence of cracks and laying the foundation for the stable operation of the rolls.

Optimize cooling system: Control core temperature

For the working rolls of hot-rolled and precision-rolled mills with high alloy content, their thermal conductivity is relatively poor. Therefore, the efficiency of the water cooling system directly determines the condition of the rolls. Generally, the surface temperature of the rough rolling rolls should be controlled below 70℃, while that of the precision rolling rolls should be controlled below 60℃. Currently, the trend of advanced rolling mills both domestically and internationally is to increase the cooling intensity, raising the water consumption per unit length of the roll body from the traditional 3m³/cm·h to 5m³/cm·h. Strengthening the cooling not only effectively suppresses the generation of hot cracks but also creates ideal conditions for the selection and use of higher wear-resistant rolling materials.

Strictly implement grinding and flaw detection: Eliminate safety hazards

Grinding is the most direct and effective method to eliminate fatigue layers and microscopic cracks on the roller surface. After we remove each roll from the mill, we must create a detailed inspection report. Our grinding must be thorough enough to remove all surface defects completely. To eliminate cracks absolutely, we must combine non-destructive testing techniques, including magnetic particle testing and ultrasonic testing. This combination of measures can accurately identify potential cracks and prevent catastrophic accidents such as breakage or peeling of the rolls during use.

Summary

Reducing the consumption of rolling dies is a complex project that involves materials science, process technology, and meticulous management. Through a comprehensive solution of “personalized material design + refined process control (preheating, cooling, grinding)”, we can systematically enhance the comprehensive performance and service life of the rolling dies. This is not only a technological upgrade but also an important way to help steel enterprises build cost advantages in the fierce market competition. We will continue to focus on this and create more practical value for our customers.
