Key to Extending Crystallizer Life: High-Performance Copper Tubes and Optimized Plating Technology

In continuous casting production, the performance of the copper mold tubes directly determines the efficiency and maintenance costs of the continuous casting machine. Due to the relatively low hardness and limited wear resistance of copper, wear is particularly pronounced in the lower half of the mold, where it bears the high stress of the billet shell. This not only affects billet quality but also shortens the mold’s lifespan and increases production costs.

Why Choose Professional Plating Protection?

To address the wear problem, we provide a uniform, moderately hard, and durable hard chrome plating for the mold cavity. This plating significantly improves wear resistance and is particularly suitable for small-scale billet molds—equipment that typically operates in systems lacking rigid flow guidance and is more sensitive to wear. Through precisely controlled chrome plating thickness (which we recommend and implement within the optimal range), the lifespan of the mold tubes is reliably extended.

For copper plates in plate crystallizers, we offer a variety of plating options based on years of experience:

  • Hard chrome plating (Cr).
  • Ni-cobalt alloy plating (Ni-Co).

These technologies have successfully met the production needs of various domestic and international customers, helping to achieve more stable and economical continuous casting operations.

Copper tube material selection: Matching your production needs

We offer three mainstream crystallizer copper tube materials, each with its own advantages:

Most steel mills use phosphorus deoxidized copper (TP2) as a mature material. It shows excellent heat and creep resistance at high temperatures. It offers good machinability. It is an economical and reliable choice.

Silver copper (CuAg0.1) contains 0.08% to 0.12% silver. This addition raises copper’s recrystallization temperature by about 100℃. This process consequently enhances the inner wall’s high-temperature strength and wear resistance. Its high-temperature performance surpasses that of TP2 copper.

Chromium-Zirconium Copper (Cr-Zr-Cu) is a high-performance, age-hardening alloy. It maintains excellent mechanical properties at both room and high temperatures. Key features include high thermal conductivity, a high melting point, and superior resistance to creep and thermal stress. While it presents greater forming challenges and a higher cost, this alloy’s overall performance substantially surpasses traditional copper alloys. This alloy ideally suits production environments where extended equipment lifespan is critical.
