Main production methods of rollers
As a key component in hot rolling production, the manufacturing process of rollers directly affects the rolling effect and service life. According to the production process, rollers are mainly divided into integral static casting rollers and centrifugal casting rollers.
Integral static casting rollers are used to inject molten metal into the mold cavity at a certain temperature and speed through bottom pouring. The metal liquid gradually cools and solidifies in the cavity to form a complete roller blank. This process has a simple structure and is suitable for manufacturing some conventional rollers.
The centrifugal casting roller is used to pour liquid metal into a rotating casting. The centrifugal force pushes the metal to fill the mold to form a high-density and high-strength working layer. This method can effectively improve the organization of the roller working layer, improve wear resistance, and strength.
Workers then combine the formed working layer with the upper and lower boxes and pour the roller core material to fuse the core and the working layer.

Classification of Rollers
There are many types of rollers, and the classification methods are not the same. Manufacturers closely coordinate pouring, cooling, heat treatment, and other processes to ensure the quality and performance of the roller.
1. Classification by purpose
Primary rolling rollers: mainly used for the initial rolling of slabs and billets. With the development of continuous casting technology, the use of this type of rollers has gradually decreased.
Strip rollers: including medium and thick plate rollers, thin plate rollers, hot-rolled strip steel rollers, narrow strip steel rollers, and cold-rolled strip steel rollers, covering the processing of most hot-rolled products.
Steel rollers: used for rolling large, medium, and small steel sections, and also including rods, wires, and steel pipe rollers.

2. Classification by material
Cast iron rollers: Manufacturers use chilled cast iron, infinitely chilled cast iron, semi-chilled cast iron, ductile iron, and high-chromium cast iron to meet different wear resistance and strength requirements.
Cast steel rollers: including alloy cast steel, alloy semi-steel, graphite steel, high-chromium steel and high-speed steel, with higher strength and toughness.
Forged steel rolls: Made by the forging process, such as alloy forged steel, high chromium forged steel and forged high-speed steel rolls, suitable for high loads and harsh working conditions.
Special rolls: Mainly tungsten carbide rolls and ceramic steel rolls, with extremely high hardness and wear resistance, used in special working conditions.
3. Summary
Different manufacturing processes give rolls different performance advantages. The overall static casting process is suitable for conventional roll production, while centrifugal casting can significantly improve the quality of the roll’s working layer. Classification according to purpose and material helps users choose the right roll type to meet production needs. In the future, materials science and manufacturing technology will develop further. Hot rolling roll manufacturing will become more refined and diversified. This will promote the efficient and stable development of the steel industry.
