High-Speed Steel Rolls: Usage, Maintenance, and Cooling Requirements

HSS roll is widely used in bar rolling lines because of its high hardness and excellent wear resistance. Although its use requirements are the same as the conventional material roller, the cooling conditions are particularly critical due to the high hardness. This paper will introduce the use requirements, accident handling methods, and maintenance points of high-speed steel roll to ensure stable operation and service life.

Cooling requirements for high speed steel rolls

When using high-speed steel rolls in rod and wire mill, in case of steel sticking or stacking accident, the following measures should be taken immediately:

Stop the water immediately to avoid the direct impact of cooling water on the hot rolling groove.

Quickly lift the upper roll to free the rolled material from the roll surface.Remove the accumulated rolling material from the lower roll to allow the heated rolling groove to cool slowly in the air.

When the production is resumed after the accident is handled, the rolling groove must be replaced, and at least 2 to 3 slots are separated.

If the groove cannot be replaced, the roll must be replaced and allowed to cool naturally before being put into use.

It is strictly prohibited to flush the overheated rolling groove with cooling water directly, otherwise it will cause cracks and seriously affect the life of the roll.

Roll use and maintenance precautions

In order to ensure the normal operation of high speed steel rolls, the following principles should be followed:

1. Roll handling and installation

When handling the roll, prevent collision or damage to the roll surface, so as to avoid affecting the service performance.

Handle roll installation with care to prevent scratches or bumps on the roll surface.

2. Roll quality management

Set up roll quality file, record roll number, size, and related test results, archive management;

Treat unused rolls after grinding with rust prevention to avoid direct contact with the ground.

3. Principles of roll use

Preheat rolls, especially new rolls, new grinding rolls, and rolls that have been out of service for a long time, to reduce thermal shock.

Use a new roll (high hardness) for finishing rolling, and use an old roll (low hardness) for primary rolling to avoid misuse and mixing.

Reasonable selection of roller body hardness, crown and roughness, matching rolling material, use pass, reduction and rolling speed.

4. Roll maintenance and record

After each grinding, it is necessary to record in detail the grinding amount, rolled steel number, specifications, rolling amount, grinding reasons (such as roll change, scratch, peeling, steel sticking, crack, etc.).

Ensure good lubrication and cooling to prevent roll overheating damage.

Regular inspection of mechanical components to avoid abnormal early roll failure due to equipment failure.

Conclusion

The correct use and maintenance of high-speed steel rolls are crucial, especially cooling management, rational use, and regular maintenance, which can effectively extend the life of rolls and improve production efficiency. Following the above requirements can ensure the stable operation of the roll on the bar rolling line, and provide a more efficient and reliable rolling guarantee for the steel mill.
