The use and application of HSS rolls in hot continuous rolling mills

Optimal improvement of production conditions:

1. Rolling temperature: The temperature of the rolled steel entering the finished product rack is 1000~1050℃;

2. Cooling water parameters: water temperature ≤40℃, single rack water pressure 0.4~0.6Mpa, single rack water volume 24~30m³/hour, water quality chloride ion <200mg/L;

3. Cooling water pipe layout: annular cooling water pipe, the water nozzle covers the rolling groove, and the main nozzle is set to align with the rolling groove at the steel outlet. As shown below:

If the on-site working conditions cannot meet the water pipe requirements in the above figure, improvements can be made according to the following figure.

High-speed steel rolls advantage

1) High-speed steel rolls are usually made of high-carbon high-speed steel, and the working layer material contains high vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, saw, diamond and other alloy elements. Therefore, the carbides in the roll structure are mainly MC type and MC type, with good carbide morphology, high hardness, uniform distribution and dispersion, and good wear resistance.

2) High-speed steel rolls have good thermal stability and red hardness, and have high hardness and good wear resistance at conventional rolling temperatures.

3) High-speed steel rolls have good hardenability and hardenability, and the hardness from the roll surface to the inside of the working layer hardly decreases, thereby ensuring that the roll has the same good wear resistance from the outside to the inside.

4) During the use of the roll, under good cooling conditions, a strong and dense oxide film is formed on the roll surface. This uniform and dense oxide film exists for a long time and is not easy to fall off, which significantly improves the wear resistance of the high-speed steel roll.

5) Due to the large linear expansion coefficient of high-speed steel materials, it is easy to cause roll shape changes during rolling. Therefore, when high-speed steel rolls are used on plate and strip rolling mills, necessary modifications must be made to the roll curve to ensure the cooling effect of the rolls.

6 The core material of the high-speed steel rolls is made of high-strength ductile iron, cast steel or forged steel, so the roll strength is high.

The single groove (times) has a high amount of steel, which saves the time for roll changing, improves the operation rate of the rolling mill, reduces the consumption of rolls, reduces the production cost, and improves the overall benefit of the factory.

Production application

Western industrialized countries have achieved extensive development and application. my country’s research and development of high-speed steel rolls began in the 1990s. Large steel mills such as Baosteel and Wuhan Iron and Steel introduced high-speed steel rolls from Belgium as early as the mid-1990s, and then introduced a large number of high-speed steel rolls from Japan and other countries. Domestic high-speed steel rolls have also been used or tried in wire and bar mills to varying degrees, and have achieved remarkable results. However, due to the unique production characteristics of narrow strip steel: high specific gravity of high-quality steel, wide working surface of rolls, high requirements for strip product shape and three-point difference, etc., therefore, on narrow strip steel production lines, there are no domestic manufacturers that use high-speed steel rolls.
