Importance of rolling mill rolls
Roll is the core component of rolling mill, its importance is self-evident. They are subjected to great pressure and friction in the rolling process, which directly affects the quality and production efficiency of rolled products. High quality rolls ensure that the rolled metal material has precise dimensions, good shape and excellent surface quality. The performance stability of the roll is also related to the continuous operation of the whole rolling production line, which plays a key role in the production efficiency of the enterprise.

Applications of rolls
- Steel rolling: used to produce a variety of steel, such as sheet, wire, profiles, etc., determines the thickness of steel, width and other key parameters.
- Non-ferrous metal rolling: such as aluminum, copper and other non-ferrous metal rolling processing, to help obtain metal products that meet the requirements.
- Foil production: When producing extremely thin metal foil, roll precision and surface quality are critical.
- Tube rolling: provides the necessary pressure and shape control for tube forming.
- Special material rolling: including some alloy materials, rare metal materials and other rolling processing.

Type of rolling mill rolls
- Cast steel roll: has good strength and wear resistance, widely used in all kinds of rolling conditions.
- Cast iron rolls: such as chilled cast iron rolls, high hardness, often used in cold rolling.
- Alloy rolls: Contain a variety of alloying elements to suit different performance requirements, such as high chromium alloy rolls.
Functional elassification
- Work roll: the main roll that is directly in contact with the rolled piece and completes the rolling deformation.
- Support roller: mainly used to support the work roller, withstand the larger rolling force.
- Straightening roller: Used to straighten the material after rolling.
- Leveling roller: used to improve the surface quality and flatness of the sheet.
Roll manufacturing process
Material selection and preparation
According to the specific use and performance requirements of the roll, carefully select the appropriate raw materials, such as a specific grade of steel or alloy. Inspect and pretreat raw materials, remove impurities, etc.
Casting or forging process
- Casting: By melting the metal, the liquid metal is poured into the mold to form. Sand casting, centrifugal casting and other methods can be used.
- Forging: The use of forging press to forge the billet repeatedly, improve the metal structure, improve mechanical properties.
Technology for heating processing
Including annealing, quenching, tempering and other different heat treatment methods to adjust the hardness, strength, toughness and other performance indicators of the roll. For example, quenching can greatly increase the hardness of the roll.
Machining and grinding
Various machine tools are used to rough and finish the roll, so that it can reach the exact size and shape requirements. This is followed by grinding to obtain a smooth surface and ensure rolling quality.
Roll performance requirements
- Hardness and wear resistance
- Strength and toughness
- Heat resistance and fatigue resistance
